Analysis of road impact factors in UK car accidents
Objective: to study the factors of road conditions that affect the occurrence of car accidents so as to reduce the occurrence of car accidents.
Abstract: car accident has become one of the four major causes of urban death in modern society. The data of this case analysis are all the accidents in the UK in 2010 and related road factors, including lighting conditions, road grade, road type, intersection control and other factors. The roads most prone to car accidents are rural daytime arterial roads and single-lane lanes of some important sub-trunk roads, and are not near intersections or automatic traffic signals.

Accidents are often caused by the carelessness of the driver. With the continuous development of China’s transportation, the number of vehicles is increasing, and the number of traffic accidents is also increasing. The causes of road traffic accidents are complex, involving many factors, such as people, cars and roads. Factors such as driving level of motor vehicle drivers, road traffic safety awareness of non-motor vehicle drivers and pedestrians, traffic travel environment, reasonable degree of road traffic planning, and whether the road traffic sign lines are perfect. This paper mainly analyzes the factors affecting traffic accidents.
The data of this case analysis are all the accidents in the UK in 2010 and related road factors, including lighting conditions, road grade, road type, intersection control and other factors.
The occurrence of traffic accidents will be affected by various factors, such as road conditions, driver status, vehicle type and so on. This paper will focus on the analysis of road factors affecting the accident. Due to the huge information of traffic accident data and the frequent changes of data over time, it would be slightly troublesome to operate with EXCEL. Using Datafocus products, a large amount of data can be processed quickly and the accuracy of analysis is also high.
1. Traffic accident statistics
To study how to reduce the number of car accidents, a pie chart was used to calculate the severity of car accidents in 2010.

As can be seen from the chart, a total of 104,029 accidents occurred in 2010, of which 85.7 percent were minor, 13 percent serious and 1.3 percent fatal. That’s 1,353 fatal crashes in 2010.
Road factor analysis
1. Regional influence
Based on the analysis of the 104,029 car accidents in 2010, urban or rural factors were first selected for analysis, and compared with urban and rural areas, where car accidents were more likely to occur.

As can be seen from the figure, there were 1,142 car accidents with more than 5 casualties in 2010, among which 670 were in rural areas, indicating that rural areas were more prone to car accidents than cities.
2. Influence of road grade
It can be seen from figure 2 that rural areas are more prone to car accidents than urban areas. Therefore, the following part mainly analyzes the road factors of rural road accidents, and observes the influence of different road levels on the road accidents through the line chart.

As can be seen from the figure, the road grade with the highest number of traffic accidents is the main road and part of the important sub-trunk road. The number of traffic accidents is much higher than that of other road grades.
3. Impact of road type
Based on the analysis of road grade, in the case of fixed road grade as trunk road and part of important sub-trunk road, the impact of different road types on the traffic accident is gained.

It can be clearly seen from the figure that the road type with the most traffic accidents is single lane, followed by two lanes, and the least is expressway entrance and exit.
4. Influence of intersection control
Similarly, the road type is fixed as a single lane, and then the influence of different intersection control on the accident is compared through the scatter diagram.

It can be observed from the figure that whether the intersection with the most frequent traffic accident is near the intersection or automatic traffic signal, followed by the intersection with automobile traffic signal.
5. Effects of lighting conditions
The light condition of road is one of the important causes of traffic accident. Therefore, the analysis of road lighting conditions can also find the impact of lighting conditions on the accident.

It can be observed from the figure that the most accident prone is not in the road without lighting at night, but in the daytime.
Finally, these 6 results were imported into the data pinboard of “road factors affecting traffic accidents”. In order to make the data pinboard more beautiful, the third preset sample was selected in the global style and the “free layout” was selected. Operation results are as follows:

Of the 1,142 crashes in 2010 that killed or injured more than five people, 670 occurred in rural areas, suggesting that rural areas are more likely than urban ones to have accidents. The road class with the most traffic accidents is the main road and part of the important sub-trunk road. The road type is single lane. It’s not at intersections or near automatic traffic signals that are most likely to cause an accident, followed by traffic lights at intersections, which are most likely to occur during the day.
1. The road conditions in rural areas are narrower than those in urban areas, so drivers should pay more attention to safety when passing through rural areas.
2. It is the single lane of main roads and some important sub-trunk roads that is most prone to traffic accidents. It is not near intersections or automatic traffic signals.
Don’t let your guard down just because it’s daytime, when you’re actually more likely to get into a car accident than at night.
